Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

By Cheryl Strayed

A #1 National Bestseller and Major Motion Picture, Wild is a powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an eleven-hundred-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe—and built her back up again. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.

I hope one day I can be brave and enjoy the pleasure of doing something really really challenging, but also extremely rewarding. I want to find myself in nature- possibly on the PCT- too someday (which I fear may never actually happen- because “someday” is ambiguous as hell). Cheryl went in head first… entirely unprepared. She faced many difficult and life-threatening situations, but all along the way I felt like I was walking beside her and that I could do it as well. I like that she wasn’t frightened, even when she actually was, it gives me some sort of peace, knowing that the world doesn’t just scare me… but she still did it. I have so much that I want to accept and I want to figure out who I really am and what I am capable of. We all carry a lot within our being (grief, anger, etc) and this story showed me acceptance/personal growth is possible. I really liked it. I hope I can be brave too.

This is my second time reading this book. Although intriguing and inspiring, the repetitiveness of parts of the book caused me to wish I were done reading.

I feel like this is the part where I have to defend why I liked this so much. But no. It was a very enjoyable book. It was bad ass. It was feminist. I might even read it again one day. I liked the journey itself, I liked her writing, I liked the people she met, I liked all of it.

A very well written, incredibly inspiring and honest story. I cried at the end when Cheryl reached the bridge. This book made me seriously think about hiking the AT or the PCT someday.
