The Bell Jar

By Sylvia Plath

A realistic and emotional novel about a woman battling mental illness and societal pressures written by the iconic American writer Sylvia Plath.

"It is this perfectly wrought prose and the freshness of Plath's voice in The Bell Jar that make this book enduring in its appeal." -- USA Today

The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: young, brilliant, beautiful, and enormously talented, but slowly going under--maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's neurosis becomes completely understandable and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such thorough exploration of the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche - and the profound collective loneliness that modern society has yet to find a solution for - is an extraordinary accomplishment, and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic.

The way I relate to her is petrifying. Ester is the exact portrait of me and this book made me experience things I thought I could never feel. By far one of my favourite books.

i am always revisiting this book, not only because plath is one of my favorite authors, but because i feel it perfectly encapsulates how hard life can be as a teenage girl. it’s extremely validating as someone who is still dealing with mental health in her early twenties, and i urge everyone to read this book

favorite book hands down. painfully beautiful, intimate, and honest; it’s both breath & heart breaking, comforting & confronting, yet charming & witty. Plath has written what i have been feeling into tangible words, the emotions and thoughts, i enjoyed every sentence. such a deep insight of dealing with depression & suicidal thoughts leaving a bitter taste of life on your tongue. the book is bound to oscillate you in a spectrum of emotions, ranging from exuberance to pity. this book has definitely changed my perception on reality.
