Mosquito Supper Club: Cajun Recipes from a Disappearing Bayou

Blog

The Junior League of Richmond’s 75th Annual Book and Author Event

Every hour, Louisiana loses a football field’s worth of land to the Gulf of Mexico and before her hometown disappears, Melissa Martin, Louisiana native, author, and restauranteur, wants to share the recipes, ingredients, and customs of the Cajun people. The stories Martin tells come straight from her own life, and yet in this age of climate change and erasure of local cultures, they feel universal, moving, and urgent.  “Writing in elegant prose, Martin is less concerned with the still-life plating of entrees than she is with painting the landscape of her upbringing.”

Named a Best New Cookbook of Spring 2020 by both NPR’s The Splendid Table and noted for its dazzling illustrations of both the food and the place from which it comes, the Mosquito Supper Club Cookbook: Cajun Recipes from a Disappearing Bayou contains lessons in sourcing, prepping, and serving the foods of the Louisiana Coastline.  It has also been called “a lovingly rendered valentine to the sadly disappearing Cajun world” and a “must-have work for anyone who cares deeply about the food of the United States”.

About the Junior League of Richmond: The Book and Author Event has long been one of the JLR’s largest fundraisers with the funds benefitting the Junior League’s work in the greater Richmond community. The Junior League of Richmond has been involved in key initiatives and advocacy efforts that have improved the well-being of women, children and families. The 75th Book and Author Event will take place virtually on Thursday, May 7th. At 7 p.m.  For more information about the event and to purchase tickets, please visit www.bookandauthorevent.org.
